Bobby reached his first peak of fame in 1958 by receiving the World Chess Grandmaster title at the early age of 15. During this same period, he won the Chess Championship in the US.

In the 60's he got connected to an Evangelic Christian church called Worldwide Church Of God. During his time in this church, he took religion very seriously. Bobby devoted both his time and his resources to the church and strongly believed in not working on Sabbath day. He also gave credit to God on various occasions for the success he had attained. Nevertheless, after the church went through some scandals, Bobby left and referred to the church as being Satanic.
