Wellington Mara

Wellington “The Duke” Mara is one of the most significant and symbolic figures in NFL history. He was co-owner and the president of the New York Giants and also fathered its current president.

Early Accomplishments

Mara schooled at Loyola High School in New York and the Jesuit University of New York known as Fordham where he scouted players for his father’s team. After his Fordham education, he became his father’s administrative assistant and club treasurer.

Best Known For

He served the NY Giants as a general manager and vice president. Ever since he took over presidency of the club, they have accrued the third highest number of wins in NFL history with 6 titles (including 2 Super Bowl wins) and 13 division triumphs.

He was also very influential behind the working formula that all NFL teams should share TV broadcast revenue equally.

Wellington is straight. He was married to Ann Mumm for 52 years until his demise.

Family

He was the younger son of Tim and Elizabeth Mara, his elder brother being Jack. He is survived by 7 daughters and 4 sons, including John and 42 grandchildren including actresses Rooney Mara and Kate Mara.

Religion

Mara was a Roman Catholic and he was very religious.

He served in the United States Navy for 3 years in the 2nd World War where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

When his father established the club in 1925, Wellington was a ball boy.

He is a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee and posthumously, a New Jersey Hall of Fame.

He died of lymphoma.
