Kathryn Bigelow

Kathryn Bigelow is a prominent film director and screenwriter from the USA.

Early Accomplishments

After she graduated from Columbia University, she began to work on her first project. Bigelow was co-writer and co-director of the movie The Loveless. It was in 1979. But it was her 1987 vampire movie Near Dark that was her breakthrough film.

Best Known For

She is best known for directing movies Point Break with Patrick Swayze and Zero Dark Thirty with Jessica Chastain. 

She also directed Strange Days, Wild Palms, The Hurt Locker, K-19: The Widowmaker, Detroit, Triple Frontier, and other films. 

In 2009, she became the first woman who won an Academy Award for best director. Her movie, The Hurt Locker, was in direct competition with Avatar, directed by her ex-husband, James Cameron.

Kathryn Bigelow is straight. She was married to James Cameron from 1989 to 1991. The two remained close friends after their divorce.

She has no children.

Family

Bigelow was born in San Carlos, California. Her mother, Gertrude Kathryn, was a librarian, and her father, Ronald Elliot, was a paint factory manager.

She directed a tire commercial starring Uma Thurman in 2007. 

Bigelow spent two years at San Francisco Art Institute and she is an accomplished painter. Kathryn started being interested in painting in her childhood as her father always wanted to become a cartoonist.
