Michael's swimming career hit its first peak as he competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics where he finished at 5th place. The following year, he won the American Swimmer of The Year Award. By 2016, he was an 11-time winner of this award.

Michael has attained the most recognition for being the fastest swimmer on the face of the earth as he has had made 6 world records that were not yet broken by 2016. He is also known to be the only swimmer to have won so many medals worldwide.
