Early Accomplishments

While studying in high school, Maitreyi began acting in school plays and musicals. 

When participating in the school production of Chicago in the lead role of Velma Kelly, Ramakrishnan decided to link her fate with acting.

Best Known For

The young actress is best known for her role as Devi Vishwakumar in the Netflix teen comedy series Never Have I Ever.

For the role, she was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in the Best Actress in a New Series category.

Family

Ramakrishnan was born and raised in Mississauga, Ontario to Tamil parents. Her parents, Sri Lankan-born Rama Selvaraja and Kirutiha Kulendiren, immigrated as refugees to Canada during the Sri Lankan Civil War.

Maitreyi considers herself more of a Canadian Tamil than a Sri Lankan. She also has a brother named Vishva.

In April 2019, Maitreyi saw Mindy Kaling's casting announcement on social media and decided to audition for the lead role in Never Have I Ever. She was chosen from 15,000 applicants.

The girl was going to enter the University of York for a course in theater arts, but she postponed her studies for filming the series. In 2021, Ramakrishnan deferred her acceptance a second time, while also switching her degree to human rights and equity studies
