The boy was interested in playing soccer from an early age – he practiced a lot with his older brothers. At 8, Messi was diagnosed with a hormone deficiency that restricted his growth. He had hormone injections but soon his parents became short of money to pay for the treatment.  At 13, the boy was offered to train at soccer powerhouse FC Barcelona's youth academy – the club started paying medical bills.
