Jack “Galveston Giant” Johnson was the first black man who became a world-famous heavyweight boxing champion.
At age of 15, fought his first bout and became to earn money in such a way. He decided to make it a profession around 1897 working in private clubs.
During that time, he scored a bunch of winnings.
He continued his career up to the age of 50 and was in a good shape even after retiring.
He was known for his patience and great tactic. During the most productive years of his long and successful career, the sportsman managed to get more than 80 winnings.
Jack knocked out his opponents 45 times and was knocked out only tree times.
Despite the fact that his parents were devoted Methodists, the boxer did not support any religion and considered himself to be not a religious person.
The “New World Encyclopedia” published an information about his life and mentioned the fact that the man “rebelled against religion…and was kicked out of church” because he stated that God did not exist.
The man was surely straight. Jack got married three times and these relationships he built with white women: Etta Duryea, Lucille Cameron and Irene Pineau. This fact was controversial and even shocking for that age.
In 2004, world saw a film “Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson” based on difficulties and achievements of the boxer.
There were six children in his family and they were to fight against racial taboos and prejudices.
Johnson died in the car accident in 1946.
