Being 17 years old, Laird was already a professional surfer and could have competed to take his career further. However, he preferred to stay away from contests and continue his modeling work. In 1987 he had a role in a North Shore movie.

Laird Hamilton is famous for his surfing accomplishments and improvements. He is the first surfer to undertake a 360-degree loop being strapped to the board. He was also the one who invented tow-in surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, and hydrofoil boarding.
